Fireside Learning: Conversations about Education

Here's a sampling of stories i've collected from my local newspapers about kids taking on projects to make a difference in their schools, their neighborhoods, and the world. I'd love to have this forum be the start of a long list of such stories. I'll bet you all have some to add.

• After learning an elderly neighbor was hospitalized with a broken hip, a group of neighborhood kids, ages 6 to 12, spent five weeks of their summer cleaning up and replanting the woman's garden. They pulled weeds, drew a landscape plan, and raised money for the plants.

• More than thirty eighth grade students shaved their heads to show support for a fellow student who lost his hair while undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer.

• To help with an oil-spill clean up, students from local primary and middle schools had their hair cut and donated the hair to an environmental group that weaves hair into mats to soak up the oil.

• A nine year old girl collected money to help birds injured by an oil spill. After she collected $450, an official bird rescue fund was established in her name and huge contributions came in from major donors.

Looking forward to hearing your stories of young people expressing their generous spirits. :-)
