Project Zero, Future of Learning, Educating for Today and Tomorrow

Just wanted to get this posted--I'll put it in "events" too.

Educating for Today and Tomorrow:
Connecting Project Zero Research with Global Issues

February 12-14, 2010
Washington, DC

Throughlines for Project Zero Classroom

1. What are the components of an effective education for the world that students live in now and will live in 10, 20, or 50 years from now?
2. What is understanding, and how does it develop?
3. What are the roles of reflection and assessment in student and teacher learning?
4. How can participants share and pursue their understanding of Project Zero's ideas with others after the PZC?

Throughlines for Future of Learning

1. What do we know?
----What do we know about globalization, the digital revolution, and mind/brain research and their influence on learning and education?

2. How might we rethink learning?
----How do we need to rethink the what, who, and how of learning as a relult of these changes or forces?

3. What should we do?
----What should I and others do differently to meet the demands of the future of learning in practice?

4. What will these changes lead to?
----What consequences may such educational changes have for learners and societies? What is our role as responsible 21st century educators?

Hello Mary and All,

Mary, it was a deep honor to be your Learning Group co-facilitator.

It was a delight to be with all the participants and faculty at FoL; I felt the inaugural institute was a grand success, a fantastic beginning in a new kind of exploration. Deep learning in the digital, global age? Yes, we can pioneer the way.

Here's a link to a discussion that's going on in the main section of Fireside: Who is the Learner of the Future? In the page I'm referencing, Jane Nordii Jessep and I are thinking through some things, and I do a bit of reflecting on the last plenary. Mary, would you consider adding in some thoughts on that forum?

Oh, I just feel so exhilarated after that experience, don't you? (Ok, tired, too! It's good to get out into the garden, listen to the birds, read in the sun...)

Hello to All,
I see so many great comments here from good friends and persons new to me. My best stroke of luck last week was to be co-leading a learning group with Connie whose mind is amazing in its focus and devotion to ideas of value for fireside.
One of the most valuable experiences for me personally was using the thinking routine, "I used to think" and "now I think" to note changes in thinking even over the short course of a week. It is a great way to surface assumptions and to actively notice changes in your own thinking and that of others who share their shifts in thinking as well. An interesting shift that was the focus of plenary experience was to follow the shits in education's desired outcome for students over a period of time and then think with others about very likely shifts in the next several years. I am going to be thinking about "shifts" for a long time to come.
Connie has posted so many of the great videos from the week that it will be possible to really get a flavor of the ideas for those who weren't attending and enable those of us who did attend to review them

Although I am not at PZC 2009 this year, I am "mentally" present with all of you, especially for the "Future of Learning institute" that will start very soon. Best wishes!

Hey, the PZC Summer Institute is going strong.
Any ideas brewing about how to weave a web of connections that last throughout the year?

Hello everybody, nice to meet you all!

I like Closing the Achievement Gap by Tony Wagner. Of course, my latest fave is Five Minds for the Future, by Howard Gardner.

Hey Everyone,
It's time to think SUMMER! I am already eagerly anticipating the learning from this year's institutes. David Perkins' book, Making Learning Whole was thoroughly enjoyable--I'm getting a lot of ideas for study-group discussions from it. Anyone know of any other recent books by the PZ researchers? Or have other books to recommend as highly relevant to the summer program?
