Project Zero, Future of Learning, Educating for Today and Tomorrow

Just wanted to get this posted--I'll put it in "events" too.

Educating for Today and Tomorrow:
Connecting Project Zero Research with Global Issues

February 12-14, 2010
Washington, DC

Throughlines for Project Zero Classroom

1. What are the components of an effective education for the world that students live in now and will live in 10, 20, or 50 years from now?
2. What is understanding, and how does it develop?
3. What are the roles of reflection and assessment in student and teacher learning?
4. How can participants share and pursue their understanding of Project Zero's ideas with others after the PZC?

Throughlines for Future of Learning

1. What do we know?
----What do we know about globalization, the digital revolution, and mind/brain research and their influence on learning and education?

2. How might we rethink learning?
----How do we need to rethink the what, who, and how of learning as a relult of these changes or forces?

3. What should we do?
----What should I and others do differently to meet the demands of the future of learning in practice?

4. What will these changes lead to?
----What consequences may such educational changes have for learners and societies? What is our role as responsible 21st century educators?

I returned home at 11pm and Thursday and Friday came quickly! I'm happy to say, I'll have time to review my notes from his talk this week, as we have vacation days. He mentioned the "fragmented generation" and "the toolkit"...I have to find more info on each. He also mentioned that young people today have few good/ethical role models. When I can digest it all, I'll get some info back to the group...

Hi Kathryn,

He's definitely worth hearing, again and again. We owe a great debt to Howard Gardner for shifting a cultural view of intelligence: no, it's not all One Thing. Yes, there are many frameworks for learning and understanding.

I have heard that a new book is coming out right about now, something about Multiple Intelligence, 25 years on--but I don't know if that's right or not.

Five Minds For the Future
is great. Maybe you'd like to start some forums about it?

My favorite book by Gardner is The Disciplined Mind.

Have you been studying the Good Work Project? (We could discuss some of those papers here...)

So glad you had the fine adventure with your student! Sounds like a meaningful trip.

Okay! Where are you Harvardites?! I drove 3 1/2 hours to Boston...after school...with a student...to hear Howard Gardner! I adore his Five Minds book and think it's essential for those who teach for two reasons: we need to read it to give direction to our students, and we need to read it to give ourselves direction!

FYI: For those who are close to Boston, Howard Gardner will be speaking on April 15th at the Kingsley Montessori school on Exeter Street. His discussion will surround multiple intelligences and his book, "Five Minds for the Future".

Hello,
The Project Zero Classroom summer institute is full and has been since January. The Future of Learning institute is nearly full--it will probably reach capacity in the next week or so.

While it might be too late to get funding for this year, it's never too late to start pursuing sources of funding for next year. We go "live" with registration for both institutes in late November.
Cheers,
Jim

Jim, and Everyone,

Thank you so much for the information about how to find sponsorship for the Summer Institutes.

I hope people here investigate. Hear that, Firesiders?! Please, it's so worthwhile! Note that Jim said it's not only for Harvard grads.

Is Project Zero Classroom full already this year, Jim? Are there openings available in the brand new course Future of Learning?

Hi All, and most recently Kathryn and Jim,

I read the book by Perkins. It's excellent. Deceptively simple. Straightforward with good writing. Good pertinent examples, a wealth of important research simplified.

How can good teaching look so easy and flowing, yet be so complex? There's such a mysterious art to our profession.

Yes, my highest recommendations for the book Making Learning Whole. I think we should read it together and discuss the seven points. (I have to forgive that so many baseball analogies are used, and not soccer! But that's ok, I can translate.)

It'd be great to share perspectives on learning, and examples of what we're doing or wondering about doing in class.

Thank you, Jim. I also ordered the book by David Perkins, Making Learning Whole, which looks fantastic...just my style. I will be reading it as soon as it arrives. Any other takers?
