Fireside Learning: Conversations about Education

The Greek word arithmos (ἀριθμός) is a singular masculine noun; its plural form is arithmoi (ἀριθμοί).

The word literally means "number" although the specific connotations of this word will be explored in many different ways throughout Klein's book.

Another important word is the Greek verb arithmein (ἀριθμεῖν), which I think will be rendered as "to count" in Klein's book. You can read the LSJ Greek-English dictionary entry online for arithmein.

A related term is the adjective arithmetikos (ἀριθμητικός) and the noun arithmetike (ἀριθμητική), what we would call "arithmetic" in English. You can read the LSJ Greek-English dictionary entry online for arithmetikos.
