Fireside Learning: Conversations about Education

This link, a brief introduction to holistic education, opens up a resourceful page of information at infed.org written by Ron Miller, whom Infed claims is "among the best known and best informed interpreters of the holistic education movement."

Miller addresses these questions:
What is holistic education?
What are the primary philosophies that distinguish it from traditional education?
Who were the pioneers in holistic education?
He also provides a lengthy bibliography and Web links to holistic organizations and schools (last updated on 12/28/07)

In previous discussions I've had with Connie and others, we've gravitated toward many of the core principles of "holistic education," without naming them as such. This Infed piece may be the best short introduction I've been able to find on the subject. Possibly, it will spawn some further discussion among us. What do you say?

HI Skip,

This is a great beginning to a worthy topic. I'd add in an article by John Miller , from the ASCD site. ASCD did a great job this last summer with two issues devoted to Whole Child Education.

Here's the editor of Educational Leadership, talking about the May issue:
Marge Scherer's "Perspectives: Why Focus on the Whole Child?"

Great topics for discussion...

Marge Scherer's article ought to "bronzed" and placed at the street entrance of every school.
