Fireside Learning: Conversations about Education

Rita Dove, who recently served the U.S. as its youngest Poet Laureate, wrote Lady Freedom Among Us for the occasion of the restoration of the statue which now stands renewed atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol building. But Lady Freedom is more than a statue, she represents the longstanding hopeful dreams of the citizens of the American Republic.

Here's a YouTube video of Ms. Dove reading her poem at the 200th anniversary celebration of the U.S. Capitol building .

For you who have not heard, US Capitol Visitor Center Opens After 10 Years of Planning

Among the new treasures is the original plaster cast of the Statue of Freedom, right at eye level. If any of you were lucky enough to visit the Capitol (as I was) during the time Lady Freedom the Bronze was down on the ground for restoration, she really is a beautiful thing to ponder. I could not walk away.

Also in the new museum are lots of big screen displays and interactives. And...a 10 ft model of the dome you can reach out and touch!

As to the rest of the museum, well, you'll be happy to know they brought it in at under two thirds of a billion dollars.
