Fireside Learning: Conversations about Education

"Global Financial Crisis Hits Mongolia's Grasslands" --by Louisa Lim, NPR

An example of a complex problem filled with variables emanating from world economy, full of questions for where things might go in the future.

The study of the rise and fall of cashmere prices is interesting enough in itself, but look at how it affects nomadic people far away from the center of things. Look at what it can lead to: the imbalancing of the herds (leaning towards more cashmere goats), which leads to increased environmental degradation (cashmere goats pull up the grass by the roots). I could see students developing a flowchart of influences, and a series of questions for further investigation.
