Your PhD sounds very interesting--I'm with Skip, encouraging you to share some of what you're studying here!
Hopefully, you'll find a collegiality in this online community that compensates for your missing local colleagues. How soon will you be completing your PhD? Please bring to our attention what matters to you, in your course of study and in your professional practice, about kids learning.
