Welcome to the world of social networking, of creating collegial communities where conversations can ebb and flow and return again... You'll find it a bit different from the way comments go on Bridging Differences, which is linear (not threaded). Here you can add in a comment anywhere within a discussion, a "response to a response" at a particular place.
Please let me (or Laura, or any of the helping team listed on the right of the page) know what you need to get used to navigating the place. I noticed yesterday that you wanted to edit after you wrote. Leaving comments on a "wall" (like I'm doing right now on your wall) is the only place where you can't edit what you wrote right afterwards simply by clicking on edit. Every other place, such as in a blog post or a forum, you can edit, so things can be changed. On a "ning" (this is a ning network), you can delete anything you've written anytime--you have control. You can edit after posting something, for up to 15 minutes or so. I'm just trying to make sure you're getting used to how things work.
Wondered if you'd be willing to put up a picture of yourself for your profile icon? I'll help you if you would like.
Also--perhaps you would consider starting a forum based on what you wrote as a comment on my wall: "Hard times for our beliefs, but we ought to be weighing in on the current leap forward in standardization--a national curriculum backed by tests being put together for 48 out of 50 stats, with lots of money behind it and being enacted by ACT, SAT and Achieve. No tachers involved. It's a shocking invasion into local and school life in the name of saving the world..."
I think we need to have that front and center, openly discussed in as many places as possible. From what I can see, most teachers--and administrators--really have no idea what's going on behind the scenes these day, and where it's likely leading to.
So if you'd like to start a forum on that (or any other topic), please do.

Is that really you? I am thrilled, and so are we all! You are a great hero in the world of education.
Your blog with Diane Ravitch (the "dia-blog"!) "Bridging Differences" is my personal favorite on the entire web. I have a stack of the your letters with the comments by readers that's literally four inches deep. (When I really want to learn something completely, I have to have printouts. I'm old-fashioned that way.) I have the pages of printout underlined, highlighted, annotated, scribbled on, dog-eared, sketched upon... You are an idea-generator. And the HEART that's evident in your writing--let me tell you, teachers in the field everywhere in the world, we need that sense of heart communicated. It's gives us energy to keep going; it uplifts and inspires us.
What a service you and Diane are providing for educators everywhere. You make us think, think, think, then think some more.
So, put you feet up, make yourself at home. Browse around, check things out. I'll get you a marshmallow to toast, a cup of tea.
