P.S. Later this week, I'll be putting together a survey of some of the features at this Ning to see what people use / don't use / possible changes they would like. There are so many different options and features that it can be kind of confusing sometimes, and Connie and I are curious to find out just which features people use and value the most! I'll be asking people for input on the survey questions later this week. :-)

Hi Dee! With blog posts, there is not a "thread" to the discussion; there is just a reply box and the replies just accumulate at the bottom of the page. Sometimes there are kind of long discussions at blog posts (like at Nathan's blog post about podcasting on Monday, where he and I had some good back-and-forth as did others who joined in) - but there's no thread or scope to it; the replies just accumulate. That would also be the case with Tami's blog post - the replies will all just accumulate there.

With a discussion forum, it's a threaded format, as you saw there in the assessment discussion. So you can either reply to the discussion starter up at the very top of the page, or you can reply to one of the replies (each reply has a reply option that goes with it).

We had a really interesting discussion a few months ago about people who are more prone to start discussion topics (like Connie, just to take one example) and people who are more prone to blog (like me for example) and people are do both (like Mike for example). It all seems to work out fine either way - everything shows up on the "Latest Activity" on the front page, which is a great way to see which discussion are active, which blog posts have a lot of comments (often blog posts have few or no comments).

What's fun is that sometimes a discussion will come back to life after being dormant for months, or someone will comment on a long-ago blog post. It all depends on how the spirit moves people!

I hope you are having fun with the Ning. I usually post something somewhere here pretty much every day... sometimes I post several things!

You've also seen the Comment Wall (how I am writing to you now); that's a way to do one-on-one dialogue with someone if that is what you're wanting.

:-)

Hi Dee, sometimes there are good discussions that grow out of blog posts, in addition to the things officially labeled discussions, and there was a GREAT post by Tami which might interest you about professional technology development for teachers! :-)

Look forward to sharing with you, Dee. As Connie says, since you come with Laura's recommendation, we are all the more eager to engage (which is NOT to say that this an elite group needing new members to be sponsored!).
I'll keep it moving forward by signing off for now...

Dee--
Greetings! I'm so glad you joined. Laura says you are an educational hero to her, and that is quite a compliment, coming from such a remarkable person. If she thinks highly of you, I do, too! (Laura is such a fine leader. She's always making us think deeply about things, primarily by provided such a fine example of being such an engaged and dedicated educator.)
Please join in on our conversations. Give us some feedback on the site and your experience as you get acquainted with the network.
We look forward to hearing about you, and hearing your thoughts about education.

Hi Dee, your joining the Fireside popped up in my RSS feed - super! There are so many wonderful folks here at this Ning and it is one of my favorite places to "hang out" online... I hope you will enjoy it! Connie Weber is the mastermind behind all of this - a super nice lady who is always coming up with great topics for us to discuss - and don't be shy to propose a discussion topic of your own! You'll see there are pretty much always people here who are up for a good conversation about teaching and learning! :-)
