I am currently a GED instructor in the Arkansas Correctional School System which services prisons and other correctional institutions educating the incarcerated.

I have observed my students in my GED classes and found many of them are very intelligent but have not found academic success in the public school system.

I believe that they are varied in learning styles to a degree to render standard educational evaluation and processes inadequate.

I have listened to Sir Ken Robinson's presentation on creativity and education and am interested in different venues and goals of education.
About Me:
I am a 55 yr. old single male. I have had a multitude of jobs/careers, including gas station attendant, hay hauler, ditch digger, burger flipper, paratrooper, MP, iron worker, carpenter, Miller, Q.C. Manager, Deputy Sheriff, Magician, High School Math and Science Teacher and GED instructor.

I began university in 1971 and graduated in 2003, the same day as my daughter. I have had many majors and changes in courses ranging from chemical engineering, marketing and advertising, Criminal Justice, Business and Education.

I am a firm believer in that we as a world are not inclusive in our education system. It is reflected in my own difficulties in academia. Working with the incarcerated I am recognizing in them the traits and difficulties I had myself and am ambitious in learning and or developing processes of tapping into the resources these students have shown potential for.

Thanks Ernest.
It's a superb initiative. I think there are similar programs, not so official as GED in Australian prisons.

Hello Ernest,
Welcome to Fireside--very glad to have you here. Thank you for telling us so much about yourself in the introduction. Your life is interesting, indeed, and the perspective you bring will be multifacted.
Have you heard of the Circle of Courage concept? Mike (on this network) knows a lot about it. He's part of a Roots and Wings group that specializes in empowering, nurturing, understanding, and opening up people who have had really hard lives. You may have a lot to add to those discussions.
I love those Sir Ken Robinson videos: so inspiring! Truth, spoken right out loud.
Tell us about your experiences, your observations, your questions. Join right in as you like!

Hi Ernest,
A varied path to the Fireside indeed! Welcome. I look forward to your contributions. But a question from downunder - what's a GED instructor?
