Little Children Learning Latin

Little Children Learning Latin. – Latin comes to life online with the Tar Heel Reader.

A new wave of publishing is currently sweeping the Latin world – but these are not high works of literature, Vergil and Cicero, but beginning illustrated children’s readers, with titles like “Colours” and “ Who is that over there?”.

The surge has been made possible by a new interactive website, called the Tar Heel Reader, developed by Gary Bishop , at the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill.

Childrens' Books in Latin

Here is what I wrote on the subject of children's books in Latin, in December 2008 - before I had discovered the Tar Heel Reader.
_________________________________________
Following on a post by Laura Gibbs posted on Latinteach, about reading material in Latin, and comprehensible input, I have this to add:

One thing we need, to promote and advance Latin, are a large number of very basic childrens books, in Latin. Not enough of these exist. Books as basic as those produced for 2 and 3 year olds,… Continue

WEB 2.0 and Latin

WEB 2.0 and Latin A response to Brian Appleyard’s opinion piece in "The Times" 18 May 2009, called “Break free of this world wide delusion The idea that the web is revolutionising our lives is not only wrong, but dangerous “ By Evan Millner,
Sent this to 'The Times' - if they publish it, well and good. If not, here it is:

Thanks, Evan - I LOVED doing the kid and wolf one, since it is a fable I had never really worked on before, so I pulled together all the Latin versions I could find (about 10) and then made the fable up based on my favorite phrases from those versions. Plus I got the benefit of some great pictures from Little Red Riding Hood stories, ha ha.
Refresh: I had the same thing happen when for some reason my browser crashed for no reason I could figure out. So now I am kind of paranoid and save as a draft every 5 or 10 minutes. Praemonitus praemunitus...! :-)

hi Evan! I'm trying to get my Delicious links library caught up (I get really behind in tagging things during the year) - do I have all your Latin AESOP audio here? I know you have a lot of other readings; I'm trying to make sure I have all the Aesop listed! If I missed some Aesop audio posts, let me know! :-)

Hi Evan, I have really been RETHINKING in a huge way a lot of what I do based on this potential create very simple readers in Latin. I finished collecting the 19th-century fables I could find from the textbooks - most of them way too hard, but it was very interesting to see which fables the authors chose to begin with (Gildersleeve had the most interesting bunch). Anyway, I am now plotting the Index Aesopi that I've always wanted to do, but could never quite see how... I am going to do it in Latin reader style, all present tense verbs... putting up the ones that are image-friendly at Tar Heel. Anyway, more soon - this is going to be a big weekend for me. I've never really thought about truly breaking free of the whole scholarly tradition on Aesop and doing something that is driven instead by teaching and learning - but that's what Aesop is SUPPOSED to be for... well, fingers crossed! I am very excited about this, and I'll be blogging about it here at Fireside, too. I love summer time!!! :-)

Here's what's REALLY weird: Gary Bishop lives just a few miles down the road from me, here in rural North Carolina (he teaches at Chapel Hill, and we both live in the countryside up north of Chapel Hill). SMALL WORLD, ha ha - but we had to meet here at the Fireside, which was created by Connie Weber up in Michigan!
I've been going through the old 19th-century Latin readers for the past few days, grabbing all the fables I can find. They shamelessly copy from each other, ha ha - but I'm hoping to use it to get some more ideas about just what people think makes for beginning Latin. It's fun looking through all those old readers!

And hi too, Evan,
What an intriguing portfolio you have! I look forward to the conversations as you browse and share here. Have fun!

Evan!!! Welcome to Fireside!!! I have bragged on you here to many people - it's a great space to meet some very nice folks and share ideas about education. I'm always hoping that eClassics could be more like Fireside; this feels like a very REAL place to me, virtual though it is, where I hang out, especially during the summer. I hope you will enjoy it! :-)
