Simplification would be a good idea. I logged onto fireside for the first time in a very ong time the other day and struggled just to find how and where to leave a comment. I might also suggest developing a central "how to" place. Not everyone her...

Hello All: Thanks for the great comments. A few thoughts and some feedback: Ian, I appreciate the self-assessment that must go into trying to understand why a lesson doesn’t come across like you want. To me, just the process of recognizing there...

Hi Connie: Thanks for your suggestion to read Tony Wagner’s “Global Achievement Gap.” I received it from Amazon just in time to bring it along on a trip to Michigan, and due to some horrendous connections through Mpls and lots of seat-time, I was...

Tell about your involvement in education, and your ideals for collegial sharing
I'm a school board member from a 3800 student public k-12 distrcit in South Dakota. I'm a long-standing educational advocate and a techie novice.

The more I can understand about education -- the real nitty gritty classroom issues, concerns, challanges and rewards that teachers and administrators face, the better the job I can do as a policy maker to create positive change for the children in our district. I blog to learn. By the way, can someone tell me what a "ning" is?
About Me:
Married 25 years to my best friend. We have four great daughters. I'm originally from Michigan (Livonia) and have lived in South Dakota since 1983. Spent four years in Kalamazoo, MI (Kalamazoo College) and then another four going to school in Minneapolis. I'm an explorer, a dreamer, a thinker, a Christian, a gardner and out-doorsy type person, a school-board blogger, a lover of red wine and dark coffee and cheese and rum raisen ice cream and lots of other delicious things to eat that aren't good for cholesterol, and much more . . .

National Education Happenings

I participated in a webinar with the National School Board Association on Wednesday about what’s happening on Capitol Hill and the Department of Education. These are the notes I took about what’s going on:

HR 3221 – funding for modernization, repair and renovation passed the House last month. It awaits action in the Senate.

IDEA funding – HR 3578 and S 1652 are bipartisan bills to provide full funding for IDEA. The average cost across the nation to educate a special education stu… Continue

Education and the Superintendency

Superintendent Kimberly Moritz commented about how an “us vs. them” attitude is a big problem for school districts because it permeates through an entire school climate.

"I’ve been on the job as superintendent in my current district for a year now. When I interviewed with all of the committees one thing came through loud and clear. The BOE actually asked me at my final interview what I thought the biggest problem was and I was able to answer, “us vs. them”. That “us vs. them” is created through… Continue

What if School Board Members were as Connected as Teachers?

Each night before going to bed I read teacher blogs. I’m impressed how technology is transforming the classroom, and I can’t help but wonder how long it will take for technology to impact school board members like it has teachers.

What if school board members, like teachers, used Nings, Personal Learning Networks, and other Web 2.0 tools to help us become better at what we do? What would that mean for our school distric… Continue

Snow Day in South Dakota . . . Time to Kick Back . . Reflect

At Connie's invitation, I'm cross-posting a few things from my school-board blog (www.school-of-thought.net). I wrote this wintery-day post this morning:
After last night’s blizzard-abbreviated budget work session and a quick call to my worried w… Continue

Education Secretary Spellings Writes Moi

Funny thing happened on the way to a school board meeting. I received a letter from U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. It’s not every day I receive a letter from a US Ed Secretary, so I thought I would share the story.
I re… Continue

Hi Fred,
Fantastic additions to Fireside--thank you very much. Wow--your blog is full of great resources and thoughtful essays. I'm so glad to see your blogs cross-posted here.
Have you seen the article by Elena Silva on Education Sector? Here's the discussion on Fireside: "Teachers at Work: Improving Teacher Quality Through School Design" It seems like a topic you'd be interested in.

Hi Fred, I wasn't born in Israel. My Israeli parents were students at the university of Toulouse at the time... But I was here from when I was one year old till the first time I traveled abroad which was 20 years later... I grew up in the beautiful city of Haifa, but I've been living in Ramat Gan for the past 17 years. This is where I raise my kids and I get very involved in the school's PTA and in the whole education process...
Have you joined our parents' group?

Of course out here in the stix of South Dakota, when any talks about UofM, they are referring to the University of Minnesota! How's that for goofy?

You went to Kalamazoo? I consistently hear that it's a good college--one that encourages, creativity, deep thinking, personal involvement in the learning. Where the professors care and find time for personal relationships with their students. I heard that long ago, and I still hear it today, from friends of my daughter who go there. She's at UM in music and physics. I went to UM also. Since I grew up in East Lansing, I was considered a traitor! Now, when UM plays MSU in some important game, I want one of those hats that's divided right down the center, showing two loyalties! Interesting that you have all this Michigan background, the triangle of travel and all.

Hi Fred,
Looks like you got the technical details all figured out--it's good to see your blog going here as well as on your site. You've gotten me inspired, too; think I'll get a blog post going today.

Hi Fred,

Yes, glad to help with cross-posting. It's very simple, just sounds fancy, as do many of the words in education-ese: "differentiated," etc!

Start a blog here on your "my page" by clicking on "create a new blog post" or something like that.
(Go to your member's page and scout around for that. If you don't see it, tell me)
then, open a window to your blog, copy whatever post you'd like to share (good luck--they're all relevant, don't know how you'd choose), go back to the other window that has your Fireside member's page up, paste, and after it's the way you would like it appear, hit "add new blog post".
If you have any trouble, write back.

Yes, I can tell you're very passionate about and committed to making a difference in education! and I know what you mean about spitting upwind. BTW, from my experience there are two professions that have people working from sunup to sundown--and often in the wee hours of the night--teachers, and farmers. You probably know what I mean... I guess it has something to do with nurturing Life.

thanks for being on Fireside.

Sorry, Fred, about calling you "David" earlier; it was the slip of an aging mind.

Hi Fred,

I'm really enjoying looking at your blog. Wondered if you wanted to cross-post some of those entries here? We can get an "overlap"going.

(Fred's blog, for people reading this:
http://www.school-of-thought.net/
also on the front page under member's blogs, thanks to Skip)

Not only is your writing very interesting (I enjoyed the posts on Randy Pausch, and the one about the letter from Secretary Spellings--), but the resources are wonderful as well (particularly My Sweet 16).

BTW, just starting the second college search, for my son. (Went through the Big Search two years ago for my daughter.) I appreciate your plea for high-quality information for consumers regarding American colleges... sorely needed.

Thanks--great stuff!

Hi Fred, thanks for leaving a message. My ning teachers' site doesn't have an English translation, there are so many communities and networks for English speakers - who needs another? However I do have a blog which I occasionally update, in which I feature applications and sites that may be of use in EFL. http://efl20.blogspot.com
