Thanks Fred, You've made me think - I'm now far more ready to 'ditch' a book that's getting me nowhere - I used to have a very responsible attitude - if I started a book, I'd finish it. (Sort of like eating dinner, I guess.) No longer. Many books...

Connie: Week 2 just began. So it is definitely not too late. Scott is right there is no way to truly keep up with everything. SO you will be overwhelmed, but in a good way. Yet, it really is an a la carte kind of opportunity, especially if you ar...

Hi Connie, I'd say go ahead and dive in. I was in and out of it several times last year and the registered user population kept growing throughout the semester. I seem to recall that it began with about 2000 learners and added several thousands m...

Scott - I was really disappointed not to be involved last year. I kind of blanked on the timing. I am trying to stay pretty actively involved as much as possible. It sounds as though there have been some changes this time around.

Tell about your involvement in education, and your ideals for collegial sharing
Having taught English for a few years now, I have never had a better job. My primary teaching focus is rooted in a deep fascination with composition instruction, which has been evolving since I entered the profession. Yet, I have interests that are wide and varied. I love the idea of sharing and exchanging ideas, as well as just talking shop.
About Me:
I am Midwestern guy (Chicago) transplanted to New England (Boston) where I am a high school English teacher. I delayed my arrival into the teaching profession almost ten years to first pursue a host of other endeavors, including professional acting, film production, and technology consulting. I have also been coaching soccer since I was about eighteen. All of those trails were great preparation for the classroom, giving me a what I hope is distinctive perspective to the profession.

Learning Evolution & Connectivism Resonance

I have to admit that there is no question that I am learning differently now than I was five or ten years ago. For one, I was able to complete my Master’s degree from a Chicago university, after moving to Boston, by completing three online courses. This was nearly five years ago and that wasn’t even my first foray into online learning. The blossoming of the internet into a faster and easier vehicle for communication has changed much of how everyone learns. Have a question, search for an answer.… Continue

Sorting Initial Impressions of Connectivism

As I learn more about connectivism, I find it to be a remarkably comforting knowledge and learning theory. My first impression is that it is a theory that fills in a lot of gaps present in its predecessors, as well as building on them and extending them with new, insights. I am still working a lot of this out, but her is my initial take.

In truth, the world in which we now live is a different place than it once was. If we accept the premise that since the rise of digital networks, in particular… Continue

Investigating Connectivism

Having casually followed the work of George Siemens for well over a year now, I jumped at the chance to enroll in the second run of the open course Connectivism & Connective Knowledge, co-taught with Stephen Downes, someone who resurfaced on my radar last spring when I was working on the… Continue

Random Thoughts on Education from a Sage Veteran

Beginning in November and running through the new year Bruce Schauble, of the blog Throughlines, wrote a series of four outstanding reflections titled “On Education.” Since leaving the classroom, he took some time to compose some of the more compelling thoughts about teaching I have read lately.

Hi Fred,
Am I remembering correctly, that you have a baby due soon?
How are things going?
Summer Farm Camp for me, outdoors all day. Exploring the woods, playing whiffle ball, gardening, brushing horses...
Check in on the network when you get a chance, ok?

How very kind of you, Fred. (Unless you mean that I am keeping people in gloom and darkness!) FL is just a congenial space for me - principally through Connie, Skip and Laura's energy - but also the many others who have contributed and do contribute, not so much in volume, but surely in depth. And here, I'd not even dare start a list!

Thanks for the welcome, I do worry about repeating myself here after commenting on several other ning sites. Guess we can only hope that different people are listening!! Here is the rest of the stuff we've done recently http://anotsodifferentplace.blogspot.com/2007/07/where-is-all-your-stuff.html

Hi Fred,
So glad you've joined Fireside Learning. I agree with Ian: you'll have much to offer here. What an interesting background: acting, film production, coaching, then teaching and focusing in on composition instruction.
I hope to hear about your soccer coaching--I've been a soccer coach for 18 years or so; find it fascinating. Also would love to hear how you like students to arrive at HS in terms of their English skills. What do you find makes for the most productive and involved students--is it attitude, experience, background knowledge, a lot of reading... what helps get them ready for your classes?
Anyhow, we may hear about your view on those things over time--meanwhile, WELCOME!

Hi Fred,
What a great range of experience. (I reckon a broad portfolio is really important in modern teaching) You got a great kitbag there, I'll enjoy what you unwrap for us.
