Tell about your involvement in education, and your ideals for collegial sharing
I have been a poet in the school and taught writing, art, and creativity classes and workshops for children and adults for twenty-five years. I have many wonderful writings from children I want to share. I find that creativity is contagious; we inspire each other. I am interested in dialog that involves questions and listening to each other with courtesy and curiosity.
About Me:
I am the author of three nonfiction books--Notes on the Need for Beauty, Changing Light, and The Book of Qualities. I have done many kinds of art; at the moment i am most interested in printmaking and drawing inspired by the natural world.

Ruth, your books look marvelous! I am really intrigued by your Changing Light book... my own personal area of interest is fables and proverbs, and the metaphorical use of day and night in proverbs around the world is very profound indeed. I clicked on the sample page and was delighted to see you have a Nasruddin story! Nasruddin, Aesop, the Buddha... collecting their insightful parables and fables has been a decades-long project for me. I've ordered a copy of your book with much anticipation!
I noticed your name because I'm another Berkeley person here at Fireside... well, a former Berkeley person anyway. I did my undergrad degree there in the 1980s and then returned to grad school in the 1990s. The last place I lived in Berkeley was in a building at the corner of Delaware and Shattuck, and I still miss the view of the Berkeley hills out of the window of my beloved little studio apartment there.
It will be great to learn about your ideas and projects here at Fireside. I teach online courses in mythology and folklore, and switched over the writing assignments in my classes to creative writing assignments, since that inspires the students to really be themselves, and to discover new dimensions of themselves, which NEVER happened back when I used traditional expository essays (boring for me to read, boring for the students to write...) - the students now do online "storybooks" where they retell traditional myths and folklore in their own words. It's such a pleasure for me; I'm really excited about seeing what projects they will choose this semester as the new school year begins!
Welcome to Fireside... and please say hello to the Berkeley hills for me! :-)

Hi Ruth,
Anna tells me you are a very creative person and that you're likely to have a lot to share on our network. So glad to have you here!

Oops, had to correct a typo, but here's my comment again: Here is a discussion (forum) that I began in December on Creative Writing. You can add comments to any discussion, current or not (they're all current, but some are buried in the archives).

And, of course, you can begin your own anytime also. :-)
