And a few more for the collection ... Sigh! (I can't find my math ones, but I know they're on this computer somewhere!) Don't you hate it when you put something in a special folder, in a special place, with a special name, NONE of which you can th...

Laura, I love comics too. I often put math related ones from Calvin and Hobbes on my math tests just so the kids can relax and laugh a bit. I also sometimes change the caption to fit what I need it to say or to get kids to read. I just use a bit o...

This is in response to the first day advice that I give to students. I teach grade six in a middle school which means the students come to us for the first time in September. They're often so anxious to "get" another student before someone "gets" ...

Wow Mike - great questions. My plan is to do some reflecting, but bit by bit, because soul searching is exhausting! Thanks for the list. I've tucked them away so I can "chew" on one at a time. A question that isn't quite so pleasant, but neverthe...

I think the learner of the future has to have drive or initiative or some kind of highly developed curiosity that will make them want to learn. They need to still have a sense of wonder about the world. I say this because what I see as a result of...

If I remind you that statistics can be made to say almost anything, then you'll think that I'm cynical about the article, and I'm actually not, but here are my observations. 1. I've had several (5 that I know of) ex - students who lived a very mat...

SIGH! Summer is not yet here for me. We don't finish until June 26th. Before then, there is a ridiculous amount of things that need to be done, in preparation for summer break. I've enjoyed looking at the photos though, and hope that, soon, I'll b...

I changed school last year. I'm a teacher librarian and the library at my new location was not set up in a manner that I felt was conducive to the way I envisioned the library working, so I came in over the summer, several days a week, and fixed i...

Oh heck no! I just love to play with photos... I think it's so much fun. I also like the sport of Ultimate... my son started playing in middle school, and I didn't even know anything about it until then. I love that there are no refs (kids referee...

WOW!!! Amazing photo, showing the intensity of the involvement, the grace, the Zen of it. Beyond cool. Do you have it up on the wall at home? Has that picture won awards? It needs to be on the cover of a magazine.

Hi Janice,

Hi Janice,
Looks to me like you're a natural networker--you're just jumping in and doing stuff. Thanks!--good modeling for others. I think it's best when we don't worry about asking questions, just ask a lot. And try a lot. Networks should be playful places. After all, we're all pioneering this technology, developing it as we go. Why not be experimental and courageous?

I just got back from overnight camping with my students (3 days, 2 nights). Each year, I have the same experience you talked about: being on the lake in a canoe, thinking, "This is the good life." And marveling that I have the privilege of taking kids out to that beautiful place.

If you want to know Michigan, you can use your hand as a map. (It's what all Michiganders do.) Look at the back of your left hand. Ann Arbor is at the base of your thumb, in towards the center about a half inch. Traverse City is on the tip of your ring finger, at Traverse Bay.

What does your husband do there on his summer trips? I spent time in that area every summer of my childhood--love the area, think of northern Michigan as my spiritual home.

So glad you're here on the network!

Janice,
So glad to have you here... welcome! Hey, you and I will have to talk outdoor stuff. What do you like doing outside? I live out in the sticks as they say--yet work in the city (if you call Ann Arbor a city). Spend summers teaching in a summer camp that all outdoors and farm-based.
Put up some photographs, ok? I like photography, too--don't make it an art form, but sure enjoy taking pictures.
Thanks for your contributions on the network--wow--you jumped right in! Nice!

Hello Janice,
How nice to make your acquaintance. Please share your passions here as you converse and browse and initiate!
(My strong weakness is books too - so much to learn, and at slow and extended times, not potted, predigested and crassly powerpointed! Now after the slow and steady assimilation, the summaries and synopses have a point...)
Anyway - welcome!
