It's so sad to hear your son's story. Sadder still is that it is so common. I don't have quizzez, tests, or homework in my classroom. I require work done to a level of the student's choosing, based on Bloom's Taxonomy. If one can only aspire to a ...

Thank you, Cindy. Your response is bringing back memories, and I'm remembering how precious those months with my children were! I also remember one report that probably influenced my decision to home school. It was the "Prisoners of Time" report: ...

Great discussion point! My children are 17 & almost 20. I homeschooled twice during their elementary school years. I almost lost both of my children when they were each four years old (hit and run driver and a stroke), so I decided to take special...

I just realized that I should invite Dan MacLeon, our computer technology teacher par-excellence, to our Ning. He sent an email to our faculty prior to the beginning of the school year, entitled, "Who's Afraid of Virginia's World". Here's the link...

Tell about your involvement in education, and your ideals for collegial sharing
After earning my bachelor's in elementary education in the mid-70's, I became a flight attendant for USAirways and stayed 31 years. I earned my Master's during that time. I was a very involved parent in the school system, always planning to teach someday. Post divorce, I started teaching. This is my fifth year.
About Me:
I am a 56 year old "new" high school teacher and mother of two daughters. One is 19 and enrolled at the University of New Hampshire; the other is 16 and a junior at the high school where I teach (lucky girl!). I am currently taking courses to finish my CAGS. I chose to have a specialization in technology because I'm not skilled in this area...and need to be very skilled. Shall we say, "I'm learning to change and changing to learn"?

Kathy,

Thank you so much for inviting me. This looks like just the kind of place I could get some of my questions on global student collaboration answered.

Hi Kathryn,
I am unable to reply to your direct message (DM) to me at Twitter because you do not follow me there. Them's their rules, not mine.
If you want to follow me at Twitter, please do. But the choice of following or not is respectfully yours. ;)

Hi Kathryn,
Thanks so much for your contributions on Fireside! So exciting to have you as a colleague. I love the organizing you're doing, trying to get people to meet up in Boston!

I notice, Kathryn, on this your personal page here at Fireside Learning (a Web2.0 social networking platform) that you have not created a posting to start up your own blog on this page. What I had suggested to you in my previous comment posted on this "Comment Wall" (another portion of this page) was that you write when you can what you have to say about your new second career in teaching in a series of postings to your blog, which has yet to be started on this page.

Please excuse me if I'm spelling out some features of this site which I may mistakenly suspect you are unclear about. My aim is to make sure you know that starting a blog is easily done and to encourage you enthusiastically to write what's on your mind in posts to it. (See Laura's blog; it's a great example of how to blog engaging happenings and initiatives that affect one's work without posting them at the main discussion Forum or at a Group.
Again, it would be great if you can find time to blog here at FL (using the blogging feature available to you on this (your) page.

Kathryn,
The more I read what you write about your transition to a new life and second career in education, the more I want to read. Please consider blogging here at Fireside Learning about the obstacles and opportunities you've encountered getting to this point of the journey and what's on your mind currently about the path ahead. The life experience you bring to telling the story can't help but keep it real; but it separates you and your perspective from those who are entering the profession in their early twenties, having just come of age. Besides, your blogging about this personal/professional transition might help those in this community and elsewhere, who are in a position to make decisions about the professional development of teachers, better see what concerns new, but maturer, second-career applicants. Also, first-career aspirants might find your comments useful in putting their own development experiences into better context. And, finally, for the rest of us in this community, they will serve to remind us of our own career entry and development and to reflect on the relevance of current PD expectations to what we experience in our actual work.
Thanks, Kathryn, for adding your voice in this community's conversations.

Welcome, Kathryn!
Great to have you here. Wonderful that you've jumped right in and joined three groups already. You might want to consider joining the Helpful How To group also. Lots of fascinating computer technological stuff on this site to explore — don't hesitate to ask. You can add photos, videos, music. I've learned a lot since joining. Lots of great discussions, ideas, resources, much to ponder and converse about. :-)

Kathryn, welcome!
Are you familiar with the Classroom 2.0 ning network? If you're looking for lots of tutorials and discussions on using Web2.0 applications to engage students, it's a resourceful network of educators to join. Fireside Learning is a smaller Ning network. Here you'll find a great place to refresh your thinking about learning and reflect on your practice of teaching with others who deeply care about learners in their charge as persons. You'll find here, too, a community of learners who are curious or concerned about much more than professional development matters--who share questions, discoveries, and enjoyments in friendly ways.
Thanks for joining us.
