Hi guys, I am sorry I missed this blog post earlier - this is my selfish reason for doing the "round-up" each week, because it helps me notice things of personal interest that I missed in the flow of things! Anyway, about lecturing: I'm guessing ...

Ian, Thanks for the thoughts. It appears that your situation is a little different in the case where information is scarce and not organized into one textbook where students can easily get to it. I would argue that this is not the case in most are...

Thanks Ken, This is a much vexed question for me at senior secondary level. At junior secondary level, the simple 'tuned-out' vote sounds the end of anything approaching an extended monologue - let alone a lecture! At senior secondary level, howev...

Connie, My students started last week. It will take us a couple of weeks to get organized. I will ask them what they think will work. I noticed that there was one person who signed up to be a mentee this morning. She is not my student but I was gl...

Sarah, Thanks for volunteering to be a mentee in this new pilot program. Do you see anyone in particular you would like to connect to?

Should lectures be banned: reflections of an online teacher

I just posted a blog on my thinkteaching social network page where I describe a conversation that I had with a colleague today. He really made me think about the changing role of the teacher for those of us who teach online and what we can learn from it when it comes to our traditional face to face classes. I am cross posting the blog here:

A good friend and colleague stopped by my office a couple… Continue

How do you get your students to take ownership of their learning?

For a long time now I have used the term "learning activities" when referring to what teachers design and carry out as they go about their job of teaching. Lately, I have been thinking a lot about moving ownership of learning from the teacher to the student. The term "learning activities" implies something that the teacher provides in the hope that the students will learn as a result of the activities.
I am now thinking that we should refer to our creations as "learning opportunities". This term… Continue

Hi Ken,
I hope it's ok that I revved things us in the Fireside e-mentoring group. I'm trying to make a simple start that others can jump in on. So far it's teachers in the field with other teachers in the field. Do you think we could offer something for your students that would be meaningful? Do your students have any needs or wishes we could serve; are there ways we could help?
Even if we don't get started with a lot of interactions with grad students (or undergrads getting teacher certification) going right now, maybe you could ask them in class about ways a network like this could be of use to them.
Let me know what you think of things so far,
Hope you're doing very well, and that it's a great fall semester!

Ken, your network is deep, rich, thought-provoking. Do you want people to join? Would you consider cross-posting some of your blogs? (Please?!) I'd especially like the one on "I am changing the way I talk about teaching"--that's been much on my mind lately. I also like "crippled for life." I would have been thrilled to have a professor like you. And AM thrilled to have a connection with you, and between our networks.

Hi Ken -- My mom used to say that you can't start anything new between Halloween and the New Year. For me, this year, that extended until the 20th of January. I would love to talk with you about our work and getting our classes together or something. If you want, I'll send you an invite to my class ning. I just started one this term for the three courses I teach. I have a separate group for each class -- other than that they are all together. I want to invite a few teacher onto the site so that they can interact with them. I found that while some of my students really took off on fireside -- others were just too overwhelmed and therefore didn't have the experience I was hoping they would have -- anyway -- i'll send you my phone number in an email message and some times next week that we could talk.

Yes....next week is a bit lighter. Let's talk then and think about next semester....a collaboration could be very useful, interesting, and motivating. I also just invited students to participate in fireside -- I wanted to see what they would do on their own...looking forward to talking with you.

Ken,
Apparently we both have invited students to participate. I'd love to talk to you.

Ken,
Greetings! So glad you're here! You add so much to philosophical talks on CR2.0, and here's yet another opportunity...
Please jump right in with any questions you'd like to set up, and share ideas you have for use of this network. It belongs to all of us--we can have some fun.
