Profile Information

Tell about your involvement in education, and your ideals for collegial sharing
I am a 34 year veteran arts educator who is currently pursuing a PhD in new literacies. I believe that we can really increase collegial sharing by thinking about joint projects that engage us as co-learners with our students and extend across national and international borders. This "web 2.0" generation wants and needs adult mentors; and I believe we have MUCH we can learn from them!
I was a Disney honoree in 1992 and Indiana Teacher of the Year in 1999.
I love Parker Palmer's book, The Courage to Teach, and a quote from the book sits in front of me on my desk. "To teach is to create a space in which the community of truth is practiced. Truth is an eternal conversation about things that matter, conducted with passion and discipline." Collegial sharing is ultimately about making that space.
About Me:
I teach high school students how the arts can excite, engage, and enliven them as learners and human beings. I am a visual artist and a musician; I am captivated by new social networking technologies (love Twitter!); and I really believe that the journey is far more interesting than the destination.

Hello Larry, and Welcome!
So glad you joined Fireside. I bet it'll be a good collegial space for you. We did a community reading of The Courage to Teach here a while ago; you can look into some of those discussions and reactivate them if you'd like.
Couldn't agree with you more about the importance of understanding new literacies--and the need for adult mentors in the Web 2.0 generation. Also, the importance of the arts!
