I think you're on target. Gaining greater ability to alter our own emotional state is key to survival in our job - and a shift in focus is the beginning of that process.

This sounds great! I look forward to doing some exploration with it. As you state, I would have difficulty getting access to open-internet applications - but this "gated learning community" might be something I could promote within my system for u...

As a teacher-in-training, I look to give and take support and advice for a fourfold job: to help learners take ownership of sound problem-solving processes, to equip learners with hands-on literacy and numeracy skills, to help close the access gaps keeping learners from full participation in our commonweal, and to keep the spirit nourished for these tasks down the long haul.
About Me:
I'm a communicator, facilitator, and educator by vocation; by temperament, I’m a singer, storyteller, and analogy artist. (You can share my onging journey to teacherdom on my blog, "Learning, Thinking, and Teaching," at http://mariawilliams486.blogspot.com.)

My decision to return to the classroom as an elementary school teacher was a surprise – to me, most of all. After a test semester as a CDC resource assistant, conducting individual and group RTI work in reading, I’m stoked about the prospect of entering the elementary classroom. This fall I’ll be interning in a grade-4 classroom, and I can’t wait to get started.

Over the years I’ve been a technical writer, taught nontechnical subjects at a technical school, operated a school-based family resource center, managed data for a nonprofit, helped run a small construction business, and – while getting my B.A. – carried mail on a very rural route, which is a great gig for a would-be poet.

These days I’m a working musician; among other endeavors, I play double bass with The LoneTones, a Knoxville Americana band that has just released its third album. I have a daughter in high school, a husband who teaches fifth grade, and a rat terrier whose enthusiasm for life is an inspiration.

Hi Maria, thanks for your message! I remember when I saw you pop up here at Fireside - a musician! That is so exciting... and from Tennessee! I went to high school in Nashville back in the 70s and also lived in Nashville again for a chunk of time in the 90s ... and now I'm in North Carolina, just on down the road from you! I teach online courses for the University of Oklahoma, which is where I used to live, but I like living in North Carolina so much better than Oklahoma!

About the mentoring project: if you are inundated with stuff, maybe we should just spend some time getting to know each other instead of trying to add to your burdens! I see you already have a blog, and there is blogging here at Fireside. It would be great if you could prompt me to be better in these last weeks of the semester about taking some time to blog and reflect, and we could read each other's posts, get to know each other, and brainstorm along the way!

Anyway, I posted something in my blog here at Fireside, with these thoughts in mind:
Post for Maria :-)

Let me know what you think, either by commenting there on the blog, or writing a blog post of your own. It will be fun to see how this conversation will evolve: I have really valued Fireside as a great place to meet and get to know other teachers, and I hope we can find some good connections that we can share!

Hi Maria,

I think it's tremendously exciting to have you in the profession. Glad you found your way back; you'll be able to share a wealth of experiences with your students. I'm sure learning will be lively, enchanting, and dynamic in your classroom.

Maybe we should get some things going--experiments, reflections. Do you have any interest in trying some of the musical stuff I'm going to be trying with my fourth and fifth graders? The forum on that: Nature into Music into Nature... (I am NOT a musician, getting way outside my realm! But I am a naturalist...)

Also, might you consider joining our "connections for learning" pilot program, maybe helping with design components, participating, too? Mentoring Program: Pilot for 09/10

Anyhow, just wanted to drop you a note--your creative energy is valued and vital... Let's find ways to be connected as we enter the adventure of the school year, especially since we teach the same age.

Hi, Maria. It's funny -- I saw the copyright conundrum posted on Laura Gibbs' blog, thought of our class, and then saw your thumbnail photo. This community is a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy it.
