Inquiring Minds

I often listen to colleagues talking about the current group of fresh out of high school students and how they aren't prepared for college- and when I listen to these conversations, I wonder if part of the problem is we've taken the fun out of learning in school- what happened to the chance to explore personal interests? Why does learning have to come out of the book only? Of course, I only have my own kids to go by but I'm amazed at how much my son learns when exploring his interests.

Algebra is not for the faint of heart

One of the downfalls to homeschooling is feeling like I have to know everything- luckily, my son doesn't agree. We're facing the algebra monster now as we call it around our house. Ama is very good at many things but apparently algebra isn't one of them. With the use of math tutors, the internet and sister who was a math major, I think we'll survive. We're trying a new approach to studying this year, though. It was Ama's idea and I think it just might work.

School is always happening at our house

Just got back from a weekend in Huntsville, AL. The main reason for visiting was the Southern Level 3 clay court tournament that Ama just barely squeaked into but we also got a chance to spend much of today at the Space and Science Center (since he didn't make it to day 2 of the tournament).

The great thing about homeschooling is planting the idea into his head that learning always is happening and it doesn't have to come just from books. The learning might occur when he needs to analyze his op… Continue
