Three weeks ago we learned that we will need a new head of school. I won't go into the politics, but I have spent too much time in the last two weeks, going through resumes, setting up multiple interviews for each of three different candidates who...

I am the academic dean of a small Quaker boarding school in the Midwestern U.S. I see both great promise and great loss in the future development of web 2.0 tools in education and in our society at large. I strive for honesty and integrity in all my work -- which would extend to this forum and I am hopeful that through "dialog" and "discussion" I will learn more or come to find a measure of peace with the progression of technology in our schools.
About Me:
I hold a bachelors in biology with a minor in philosophy, and a masters in gifted education. I am certified to teach 6 - 12 science and have taught briefly at the community college level. This is my first year as an administrator and I am deciding whether or not the job description is a good fit.

I have two children and homeschooled them for five years. I have been married for twenty years and enjoy reading fiction and memoirs, spinning and knitting, running and taking long walks with my husband and our dog. I am something of an "experience junkie" often trying out new things and while such pursuits can often be found in my own backyard, I do enjoy travel as well.

Hey! Nicole, so glad you came.
Shall we get up some videos on How to Milk a Cow? I'm all for it. I didn't know the website you referred to: "ehow" or something like that?
You can come visit me at my place and we'll go to a local dairy farmer I know. He's set me up for years with my Farm Camp. Kids actually get to milk cows. I know, you're saying that's a world different from having to milk a cow, day in, day out, without any break ever. But still...
I know the dairy farmer's perspective a bit, second-generation, vicariously. My dad grew up on a mixed farm including dairy. (I know about his nightmares too--he'd wake up in a cold sweat some nights, thinking he forgot to milk the cows... )
Anyhow, welcome. Join in the dialogue. I'm sure you'll have a lot to add!
It was very fun to get to know you a bit. I'm looking forward to extending the conversation!

Hi Nicole,
I too have concerns about web 2.0 technology - mainly the inequity of access. On one hand, I see that students from this small community are able to get a wider perspective using tools that connect them to the global community, I also understand that the vast majority of children have much more fundamental needs for clean water, disease prevention and protection from violence. I hope that by developing my students sense of being a global citizen that they will be motivated to follow further education and employment in areas that will benefit people less fortunate.
We have about 270 students from prep to year 12 - how many at your school?
Best regards, Britt Gow

Hi Nicole, Thanks for your message - your school sounds like an inspiration to many! We too have a vegetable and herb garden, which the food technology students raid occasionally and a "Bush Food, Fibre and Medicine" garden, with indigenous Australian plants. The systems and technology students have installed a wind turbine which charges batteries used for small tools in the shed.
This year my students have been involved with revegetation projects for the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot, planting shelter belts on farm properties and along side an old rail trail.
This week we are heading down to Melbourne ( Three hours by train leaving at 5.45am!) to participate in an awards ceremony for the ResourceSmart program - we are finalists in the Biodiversity section. Does your school have a website with your sustainability initiatives on it?
Best Regards, Britt Gow
