mmmm..... this is such a big, fat, broad question....... I agree with Nathan Lowell though - it's a political issue - and I think there'll only be real learners in the future if educators and governments can work together to build education syste...

Hi Paddy,
How is your social network for children's services professionals? What are you discovering about networking? Would love to hear how things are going.
Nice late-summer weather here. The garden is in full production. There's so much canning and freezing to do right now. Great bounty. How's the weather in London?
Yours,
Connie

It's very exciting that you'll be managing a social learning site for children's service professionals. Let us know how we can help!
Welcome.

I'm a professional editor. Over the past ten years I've edited two magazines - the first focused on out-of-school-hours learning (extra-curricular) and activities as a way to raise pupil achievement levels, re-engage disaffected learners and excite young people about their personal learning journeys. The second has been focusing on the development of schools as learning and care hubs within their communities ('extended schools' in England and Northern Ireland; 'community focused schools' in Wales; and 'integrated schools' in Scotland). If anyone would like to know more, visit www.everychildmatters.gov.uk/ete/extendedschools.

I will shortly be involved in managing the development of a social networking site for the various children's services professionals involved in the development of extended services in and around schools. These people could be headteachers, teachers, teaching assistants, school nurses, social workers, youth workers, family learning professionals, children's services directors in local authorities, children's centre managers - in fact, a huge array of people all dedicated to helping children, young people and families achieve their potential and improve their lives.

I'd be interested in talking to anyone who knows about the pitfalls in running such a social learning network and would be pleased to have any tips from anyone.

Also, I would be really pleased to hear from you if you live in the UK and are involved in the extended services development that is happening in schools. It's an exciting strategy. During my time as editor I have talked to so many people who are utterly convinced that putting schools back at the heart of their communities is the starting point for developing a 'learning culture' in communities - particularly in so-called 'deprived' areas.
About Me:
I'm a South African-born New Zealander, living in London at the moment - but will return to New Zealand one day - as that is my chosen home.
