I teach in a teacher education program and have to admit that there are a multitude of problems with what we do and how we do it. Whether anyone wants to hear it or not, or admit to it, thought there are brilliant teachers everywhere, there are to...

I really had others write major portions of the piece for me. I too am a fan of science, economics too, and just about everything else that I can lay my hands on that helps me to better understand it all. And there should be no need for figuring o...

Related, perhaps, to the discussion, a piece I wrote for a campus report: UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY REPORT PP. 78-802009 [www.unr.edu/sustainability] Conceptual Considerations Integrating sustainability into the curriculum...

I sent this article out to many and I did so because I thought it was right on target, even though there are passages that, when decontextualized, may lead to annoying conclusions. A friend who is a physics professor was put off by what he underst...

Greetings, Stephen,

Glad you've joined Fireside. Your perspectives and experience will be valuable here: progressive education, school-starting, interdisciplinary learning.

Please make use of our videos, references, connections... share the Fireside network at the U.

Oh my gosh--you saw Ming Wei? She is one of my favorite people on the earth. Just imagine, I used to have the great joy of talking teacher-philosophy with her every single day. She's so energizing, so deeply thoughtful. (She's also really zany; she and I were partners in crime that way.)

Anyhow, welcome! Join in, start participating. Any questions, just ask. You can write a note to any of the Fireside Council by clicking on them (right hand side of the page) and then "send a message."
Enjoy! Give feedback on how you find the site. Help shape it!

I teach at the University of Nevada, Reno and have taught teachers for over 23 years. I am an advocate for progressive education and have participated in creating two schools, one a public middle school that became the first true middle school in northern Nevada, the other a charter high school based on principles of localized interdisciplinary learning developed in the book The Interdisciplinary Teacher's Handbook, written with Stephen Tchudi and published by Boynton-Cook in 1998.
About Me:
I now regularly visit Hawaii because my 93 year old mother lives on the north side of the island. I was walking through a little town when I came upon Koh Ming standing outside her school. We talked for a good while and I was greatly impressed with the program and its philosophy.
