Tell about your involvement in education, and your ideals for collegial sharing
I really value the reflections about my own practice, and the connections with others and what they do, that preparing to post on my blog entails for me. My school is out in the middle of cow fields and where Amish buggies can sometimes be seen on the roadsides. Some of my students are only able to get on the internet through a phone modem, a few don't have computers at home! I often wish for a chance to share with and participate in professional development in a larger community. It's just me out here. Connecting with an online community gives me some wonderful friendships, a chance for professional development, and just plain getting to have someone else in the conversation who understands my teacher-speak!
About Me:
***Through some really unusual and unwelcome circumstances, I wound up taking on another position on top of my current one (in order to help a small non-profit weather a major crisis) and I'm afraid that I'll be on a sort of "hiatus" from my normal internet participation until March, when we should be able to chart a course and plan on hiring someone to fill this second slot. In the meantime, I apologize for having signed onto this group before being ready to fully participate. I just couldn't pass up Connie's emailed invite, knowing how much I have enjoyed her contributions on classroom20. ***

I have a Master’s in Education, a history of being a librarian before becoming a teacher, and have been enjoying earning the moniker ever since I dubbed myself an accidental techie.

I'm fond of dragons, calligraphy, sci-fi, lobster, and home-made sushi when my family and I vacation in Maine, our favorite place to be.

Hi Sue,
Yea!! Thank you so much for signing onto Fireside. How exciting.
Can't wait to hear about your experiences at school, and your reflections about education overall. BTW, I live in a rural area and have dial-up at home; the contrast with my high-speed super technified school setting is dramatic. Guess I know both worlds.
Dragons, calligraphy, sci-fi...yeah! I just had a mom in my class teaching Chinese calligraphy; I was impressed with how the students practically went into an altered-state while learning some of the characters. (I don't see that at all while they're practicing "cursive.")
I think we should get some sci-fi discussions going--good to keep our imaginations active.
Thanks so much for joining; you are indeed welcome--have loved hearing your thoughts on CR2.0 and will enjoy hearing them here, too. (We can even cross-post discussions and blogs if you'd like.)
Cheers!

Hi Sue,
Nice to have you here, even though in absentia. (Marielle has had a bit of an internet disconnection saga also.)
Ah, but to be where the buggies are, as well as some technology- it can be isolating and frustrating - but on the other hand the cowfields are a reminder that the world has its rhythms and seasons and patterns - regardless of our rush and bustle.
(Ignoring the fact that our rush and bustle may be bending the rhythm and pattern and seasons of the world.)
I think it was Connie, on CR2, who started a post on ecological illiteracy. We need the buggies - as well as the rest! Well, enough drivelling on.
Welcome (- your voice may help drown mine out!)
