Fireside Learning: Conversations about Education

Wow, this is a powerful documentary about coal mining in China. It is presented in a "choose your own adventure" format. You can return to any step on the journey and take a different path by clicking Show Map icon. Click on the image to go to the site.

This documentary is especially relevant because China and the US are the biggest consumers of coal as an energy source. Coal supplies 50% of US energy 'needs' ; in China, it is 70% -80%.

As I watched the documentary, I wanted to know more about who produced it. It is easy to manipulate "translations"- did the filmmakers really talk to those individuals? Important to know. But the images themselves tell a story, no matter what other manipulations or spins have been applied to the footage.

Powerful stuff. It is distressing to me that the Chinese government has blocked access to social network sites such as Ning. I think of my online Chinese (good) friend, and wonder. I also wonder about the fate of our planet.

A year or so ago I made a mini-unit on the history of US mining. I'll try to find it and post. Thanks to Larry Ferlasso for his blog, where I found the link to this documentary.

I hope you take the time to watch this one; it is time well spent, both for content and for exploring ways to present educational materials.
