Hi Connie, my Mini-Ning has been working out great, too!!! I never have more than 100 members at a time, and now that they have opened up the blogging option as unmoderated, I was able to switch my Ning down to Mini status and save myself a ton of money... which I immediately spent on DVDs from Amazon, ha ha, so I guess I didn't really save the money after all.
True confession: I am completely infatuated with Google+ and how that is working for me right now so I have not been at Fireside much. I don't know if Google+ will last or not but at least right now I am finding it really stimulating - it allows for real discussions but also just quick sharing, and at last, my Latin world and teaching world are combined in the same place. So nice!!!
Connie, I got it to work: just go to Manage-Settings-Features (not Features Layout, just Features) - I selected newest comments at top of wall. That fixed it. They have other options and stuff there, too, so you can check it out - but this popped the comment wall back to the way it is supposed to be, with newest comments on top. You have over 400 comments - having oldest on top would be REALLY weird for you! So that mystery is solved!
Eeek, not good - I just got your note and the link took me to the first page of comments... but here you are on page 9! I will explore that when I start working on my class Ning, probably tomorrow.
And as you have probably noticed, I am totally sucked into the world of Google+ - it looks like that is now my main hangout. I really love it - the fact that it combines public/private modes and that it lets me do Latin and school and random stuff in the same place is soooooooooo nice. So I probably won't be at Fireside much especially in the next crazy month or two of school starting... but I can keep doing the roundsup if you want...? Should I do that? It is very fast and easy for me with my little system - so let me know, meanwhile I will check on this comment thing; that is definitely a drawback for my class if there is no way to change the option. I will let you know what if anything I can find out about that! Thanks so much for alerting me!!!! (best to write me at my email, Gmail or OU either one is fine, since I am not checking Ning emails or any other group stuff right now since I am so busy with school)
It occurs to me that the advent of Google+ might diminish the need for specialized sites on Ning. Google+ is still too new to appreciate its limitations relative to a Ning site.
More to the immediate point is the issue of cross-linking items between Ning communities and their participants' related circles on Google+. What I would like to see is the use of Sparks on Google+ to provide a feed from community sites like those on Ning. Currently, I have a Sparks topic named "Science Education" which could just as easily have been defined to provide a sub-feed from this source.
Thanks, Connie! I am definitely thinkin' and so I'm gonna try to post something here in a bit! Gotta get in touch with Janet too!
The camps sound like a good time. My dad's childhood dream was to be a dairy farmer (he grew up on a farm for a little bit) and so I always wondered what it would have been like. You'll have to tell me more!
I currently got a job as a teacher in a toddler classroom at a different branch of the migrant head start program that I have worked with over the years. I'm getting excited to continue to develop my Spanish and also get engaged with some things about brain development and the sort with working with the youngins. Even though it is a federally financed program, there is a more "social advocacy" feel to the place than the public school politics. I just got done with all of that in a long term subbing position for second grade ELL students!
Connie, it is amazing that you have so many friends. I was reading your profile, wow, you have lots of experience in teaching and learning. Yes, you should go back and get a Ed. D. That title fits you really well. Yes, you do have lots of comments, thank you for taking me as your friend.
Hey, Connie, This is my first time writing something in Fireside, let me know if I am doing it right. Actually I purchased Alone Together two weeks ago, and listened to Sherrie Turkle's interview with NPR second time today. Where is the book discussion link if I want to join in? I don't know how much time I will be able to be with you guys. Be patient with me, I might pull a few all nighters to catch up with you.
Hi Connie! I was just updating instructions for my students and I discovered this perfect little "paste as plain text" in the new Ning editor that will help Cindy et al. with the problems they were having as they pasted content into the Ning that did not display correctly. I've put a note about that on the front page of the Ning for now; is that okay? You can decide how long you want to leave that up. This is something I have never seen in a text editor before, and it is perfect for solving the problem that people were having!
