Hi David,

Thanks! It's wildly fun to investigate this form of construction now that it's coming so close to home. Yes! That's the slideshow I remember. If you're interested, or if Kimberly is, here are some more links of straw bale construction:

You are right, I'm at the school year's beginning. Two more days of summer, and I'm allowing myself the time to think creatively and "big" about ideas for framing the learning. How I love this time, the "open slate" filled with potential, the awakening, the creation of a learning community.

Semiotics? Yikes, sounds way over my head! But sounds fascinating, too. Please do get some discussions going about your investigations, anything at all that's on your mind. You enrich the Fireside Community so much. And you are definitely needed in the e-mentoring pilot.

My recent investigations have had to do with globalization, something I know you specialize in! Have you read any of Marelo Suarez-Orozco's anthologies? Would love to discuss them. Do you have any books on the forces of globalization to recommend?

See you around! I'm having my morning tea, spending time in my quiet classroom (for highspeed) on online stuff, getting ready to go back home for a run on the country roads. Then, more pesto-making from the basil harvest, while thinking expansively about ideas for class.

Hi David,
I'm remembering (whether accurately or not) that at one time you sent me information about straw buildings... You know what I mean? My neighbor has just launched a workshop on straw construction at the abandoned old farm house next door to me. The workshop will actually create a new living space. Don't you have a friend who's involved in this sort of thing? Am I right in remembering that you might consider doing some straw construction at your folks' farm?

Hi David,

Thank you so much for your footprints on Fireside. Leave some more! Hey, I'll leave out a red carpet for you... But no, I think you'd rather have an open road and the wind at your back; you can have that, too.

How are things at EFL? How do you think the community there is doing? What's happening in the world of second language teaching overall, any trends? (Even if you have time for just a few sentences... I know you're plenty busy.)

You are the master... So glad you're training teachers!

Hi David,

Thinking of you today: Steve and I showed EFL Classroom today to a group of independent school educators. We were talking about networking for professional development. What a lively, jazzy, learning-filled environment you have created! So proud to say we know you!

Hope you are well and enjoying things.

Are you running a lot lately? I had a great run on election day--sort of magical. The coyotes were howling (it was sunrise) and I called back by cupping my hands and making that whistling sound. We had a conversation, the coyotes and I... all part of the adventure of a long, slow run. How about you--covering much territory on your runs? Getting into any adventures?

Just checked my copy of Copley - he does say 1943 "when bombs were falling on London" (xiii)

David, welcome back from the island - at least you weren't parachuted in!. Had a brief read of One Year with Kaplan - I don't think I've got the resilience to read it all carefully. Roll on Nathan's singularity if education must stop for the coaching test - I don't need to be smart to know that at least one of the systems is broken. I just hope I can turn something to good account in my closing years - despite all the reframing and spin. I was just reading the other day. Terence Copley, Indoctrination made the comment that the last time a full fledged, wide-ranging, inclusive, philosophical coherent discussion about education and its processes was held in the UK was in 1943 (well the book says that - I reckon its a typo for 1948). In any case, its too damn long ago.

I love the idea of Lap Attack! It is really great that you were able to use your old medals for such a great purpose. I've just thrown all my old emblems of accomplishment........not really wanting the trophy case I desired as a kid. I wish I would have thought to give them away!

The legs are feeling great. I didn't get sore much at all after this marathon! Usually it takes a week or so to get back to normal, but this time it was just a couple days of mild soreness. Pretty fun!

Sorry, DAVID, not Skip! I was looking at Skip's message on your wall as I was typing!

Hi Skip!

Thanks for your response on my blog! I looked at your article that you left about the treadmill world record! Wow! That is pretty incredible! Do you listen to music, watch TV? I thought running 18 this winter in snowy Michigan was about all I could handle, but that is child's play to you! It is great that you share your life with your kids! They really DO love to run, and I am inspired to try a similar running program with my kids when we need a break (or just for the first 15 minutes of the day anyway). I guess I'd have to wear more work-out friendly clothes to work, but it could be amazing to watch the kids enjoy fitness and share my love!
Thanks for the inspiration!

Would you consider becoming the key partner with Connie in maintaining and growing the Fireside Learning Ning? I have been trying to assist her so far but will be called away from a significant role as an administrator by professional time constraints. Your developed expertise in the use of a Ning network will be of great service to her in her classroom and educator Ning networking. If you're agreeable, your status can be changed from member to Connie's vital collaborator in Ning networking and in the educational use of Nings. Please advise her or me of your interest in such a partnering role. Thanks.

David,
The original code you sent so generously to us would not embed. Thanks for creating another link to the TED talks viewer. I'll get code that will embed here at FL.
Thanks.

What do you wear over your mouth while running in temps below zero? Do you just breath that air straight in? that's the part that bothers me; I can get warm enough otherwise. I like running in winter.

Are you getting a really long break--have you had time off already? What's the system there? It's great that you get to go visit your dad; I'm sure he loves it when he can get to have you as a skiing partner!

Great things you're doing at EFL--the page directory will be very useful. Also, the powerpoints converted into flash... You have brought that network to amazing heights. What a tremendous resource-station, and learning "playground." It's so active, inviting, interesting. My kids will be back visiting next week.

David,
Are you in snow country now? Here, it's gorgeous. We had about a foot of snow. The trees are laden with snow and sparkling in the morning sunshine. I'd go out running (on the road) but it's well below zero. What's it like there?

Ah, but I can't work towards joy - this is the genius of Lewis - and for that matter Aristotle. Joy comes. It's the gift.I don't watch the sunset for joy - but it comes with it. That's where the authentic happiness bunch have a point - 'the pursuit of happiness' is not a valid pursuit, they'd say - but as we grow, mature, develop competences etc happiness/joy are attendant upon those pursuits.
But it's goodnight from me - I'm off to bed to read my next Earthsea book from Ursula LeGuin.

Hi Dave,
I noted your comment about joy and pain - but rather than start a wild goose chase on the joy forum, I'd ramble here! My wife and I have long discussed this idea. We've thought that as long as there are a range of intensities of joy, pain is not the essential to understanding joy that many assume. (Thinking mathematically, a scale of 0 to +10 gives a scale of comparison equivalent to -5 to +5) So, if there are days coming when there is wholeness and health, when pain is gone, then joy is still meaningful and real.

David,

Thanks for the comment. I live in west-central Saskatchewan but I grew up in east-central. We've lived in all areas of the province except the north. We love the province and all it has to offer and spend a great deal of time visiting different parts during the summer.

I enjoy reading your responses and your insights on the various forums. They make me think and reflect which is what we need to do as educators. Look forward to the conversations here.
