Hi Laura! Did the music player on all our "My Page"s go bye-bye? I just went to update it with some Xmas carols, and I couldn't find it!

Now I have a yule log with no songs, as I can only put one widget in a box!

Thanks Luara,
I remember your praise for Kingsley from before. I must get him from the library (yes, they have it!) and do some solid reading.

Hi Laura,
As I was wandering through bookfinder, I came across this oddity - may be worth a look?
'Caves and the Ancient Greek Mind analyses techniques of searching for ultimate wisdom in ancient Greece. The Greeks perceived mental experiences of exceptional intensity as resulting from divine intervention. They believed that to share in the immortals' knowledge, one had to liberate the soul from the burden of the mortal body by attaining an altered state of consciousness, that is, by merging with a superhuman being or through possession by a deity. These states were often attained by inspired mediums, `impresarios of the gods' - prophets, poets, and sages - who descended into caves or underground chambers. Yulia Ustinova juxtaposes ancient testimonies with the results of modern neuropsychological research. This novel approach enables an examination of religious phenomena not only from the outside, but also from the inside: it penetrates the consciousness of people who were engaged in the vision quest, and demonstrates that the darkness of the caves provided conditions vital for their activities.'

A little esoteric for my local library, a little too expensive for my personal one!

Hi Laura,
Thanks for the clarification on the link-banner, trying-to-be-like-twitter thing. I'm still in the fog about what they mean by "post a link" and "update." Given that I'm not yet tuned into twitter or facebook, I'm missing some of the info on what any of this means. Just curious. :-)

Thanks!
:-)

Hi Laura,
Can you tell me what the blue banner on my page that says, "what brings you here?" is all about? It also says, "post a link" and "update." Update what? Post what kind of a link?

I think it is some sort of Ning thing that I'm hoping you'll know about.

thanks! :-)

Hi Laura,
Do you have a couple of favorite proverb sites? I can get proverb sites in general, just wondered if there are particular Laura-favorites.
Thanks,
Connie

Eva Brann's Feeling Our Feelings: What Philosophers Think and People Know I've (mostly) read, Laura, and recommend it. It's especially timely considering all the connections folks are making with one another via social media. Suddenly, we're in a more complexly emotional/personal virtual community that we're all learning to navigate toward enjoyments and away from dangers.

Laura,
I agree with what you said about Fireside, how it makes us pause, reflect, set goals, re-energize. Thank YOU for making it happen! You contribute SO MUCH to this site; without you it would not be anything like it is. Your technical expertise and your thoughtful written contributions keep this network functional and hopping! Deeply grateful...

Hi Laura,
Wow--just going through your blog posts. You are an inspiration. I have to get going on writing about class, like you do. It's such a great way to learn from each other.
A question: where is the blog post you put up about the student who can ace punctuation tests, but doesn't apply her skills to her writing in general? I've been thinking about that one a lot, but can't locate it now.
Thanks, keep up the news about your endeavors. I count myself as lucky to have you as a colleague!

I'll add this blog to my circuit and try to hit it once a week. As you know, I have a few ideas on education that go beyond foreign language. :-)

Laura hi
Thanks for your comment--your memories of Berkeley, etc. I look forward to responding more soon.
I'm having problems with my right shoulder, elbow etc and minimizing computer typing lately-- a bitsproblematic when we all communicate so much electronically. I just came back from a walk in one of Berkeley's botanical gardens and was again struck by how beautiful these East Bay hills are.

Thanks, Laura. Glad ning is being helpful. I've always found them to be very courteous and on the ball when it matters. Thanks for sticking with the investigation.

Laura!
Well, even Homer nodded, but...
Shlain just informed me that 'planet' meant wanderer in Latin. He's right, except about the Latin. My Septuagint studies told me that planao was Greek for I wander. Oh dear, we'll all have to watch our backs.

G'day Laura,
I've just received Shlain's Art and Physics. FABULOUS. It's so exciting I'm reading it badly - just rushing through to get the next connection!
He has a great note on 'gloss' (Chapter 3, I think)- where to start with it means tongue, but then becomes the breaking through of God's word from the word (an illumination, I presume), and later carries the sense of 'shine' or 'glitter'. I need to return and ponder it to see if it is indeed so, but the suggestiveness of his work is the exciting thing.

Hi Laura,

Check out our delicious links - I've just discovered Codex Sinaiticus on-line. Wow!

OK, Laura,
I've sent good money after bad! Looking forward to 'Catching the Light'! (At least some of my bellwether commenters have given a thumbs-up - like you, James Gleick, Kirkus.) It was Fiat Lux that tipped me in. So is this excursion anthroposophy? I'll keep on Kleining for a while, when there's some time, but the flame is low!

Thanks so much for the expert mapping. I was finally able to locate the page and choose the option to be notified of new discussions in particular groups.

I'm wondering if there is a way to make this easier for members to choose that option. For instance, when they sign up as a member of a group, could there be a button that says something like, "if you would like to be notified of new discussions posted to this group, press here." Something that is right on the page where they sign up? :-)
