Yep! I suppose that depends on the person--how much you knew coming in and how much you care now, but yes, standing here now I see the squad leader job as much tougher!
I imagine you all read One Bullet Away? Great leadership treatise. Wish I could get some of the people here to absorb it.
Jump in to a discussion or two! Or start one on US military literacy--I keep putting that one off.
Luke! HoHo! Am I glad to see you chip in on this network!
We need more voices here from the consumer side of the story, and people who know a tad about national security and the responsibilities of education toward producing citizen-soldiers, be they warriors, or informed voters.
Hi Luke,
How's it going? Haven't heard from you in a while. How's military life, and what are you studying in your courses? Are you coming by to visit soon? We can get into some debates about politics... and eat some pesto or pie, go for a woods walk, talk about life.
Take care, missing you,
Connie
Hi Luke - I just noticed your comment on Connie's wall about the heavily qualified mob here. Don't let that fool you - they(we?) all have to put on trousers one leg at a time. Ground us in some practical comments, questions and experiences, and even the request for some plain English from time to time.
And post your own stuff - what needs comment from your perspective - there may be plenty of 'lurkers' waiting to connect with your close concerns.

what about posting some youtube videos that would bring some responses in?
Also, have you seen the TED group? The TED site has some fantastic videos we could watch and discuss.
And yet more ideas: comedy....

Maybe we could work together in setting up some forums that would invite a wider participation, particularly with young people.
PS: I love the costume ideas!!

HI Luke,
Thanks for your note. I really appreciate your feedback. I very much want to make this a place that young people feel comfortable joining and participating in conversations-young as in upper HS and college, just beyond college, etc. If we're not listening to young people, what is the use of it all? I think maybe I need to do some work to get Fireside more attuned to being inviting to young people, and to having people really listen to them.
Please keep the feedback coming. If you want to write to me privately, there's an email here, the little envelope on the top of the page. Otherwise, writing on my wall is just fine if you're ok with everyone being able to see it.
Call me when you're in town and we should be able to find a time for coffee or whatever--
Good to hear from you. I value our connection.

So good to hear from you. American Politics sounds interesting; I'd like to hear more. Stop by next time you're in town and we'll be able to converse!
I'd be interested in your impressions of this network. What will make it inviting for more young people to jump into the conversations? I've got a number of deep thinking young people like you here, but mostly they don't participate in forums. Why do you think that is?
Back to Star Wars for a moment: once, as a young teacher, I dressed up as Princess Leah for Halloween, and much to my surprise the little kids thought I really WAS the princess. What a gas that day was. Now I'm trying to think of a wise old woman I could dress up as. Any ideas? (Be careful... has to be someone good, admirable, all that...)

that's what comes to my son when he thinks of a star wars quote.
I think more of "exqueeze me," from Jar-Jar Binks.
and I'd like it if you'd add in some of the perspectives you are learning from being at West Point, too. What are the classes that have you thinking most?
Yes! You are here! Luke, I'm so glad. After all those "intellectual discussions" amidst Farm Camp, with zany kids hovering around the picnic table where we're talking, and drawing, and, ok, playing the 100th card game that day...
I hope you like Fireside. There's a lot to think about regarding education. You can help us see all sides. I'm particularly interested in the education you got at Community High, in debate--and much more. Please share your perspective and experience here on the network.
Thanks, Luke. Glad to have you. I should probably mention to Firesiders that you have worked for me for countless summers, and that you were in my class as, what, a fourth and fifth grader? Lots of history.
PS: I don't necessarily think everyone will get Star Wars references, but a lot will, and I"ll let you know I'm still trying to Get the Force.

Was it really a briefing? I fear my clearance is lapsed, so you'd have to shoot me if you told me, I guess.
I also thought your reappearance here ment that things had slowed down for the semester- break was on. Apparently not. Hope those finals are going OK.

And, you may like this photo discussion I posted last week! :-)

What's your major?
Look forward to seeing you reveal more of your true self - never mind the paternity status!
