Liz Coleman's call to reinvent liberal arts education

"Bennington president Liz Coleman delivers a call-to-arms for radical reform in higher education. Bucking the trend to push students toward increasingly narrow areas of study, she proposes a truly cross-disciplinary education -- one that dynamically combines all areas of study to address the great problems of our day."

One aspect of reconstructing American society out of its failures of cultural/political imagination is the innovative work Liz Coleman is about in higher education. I want to listen to her voice of educational leadership/activism at least once a day for a while, in order to savor the wisdom with which she confronts the dying of wonder in learning and in being a learner. Her dream for university students as persons full of creative responsiveness to their lives inspires the hell out of me (literally). One cannot remain cynical about possibilities she sees.

Thanks, Connie, for knowing the time has come to be for us to confidently plant our dreams to give them a chance to grow, instead of carrying them protectively where they face no risk. More educators, following Liz Coleman's lead, need no longer wait to be transformative wherever they may find themselves practicing as teachers and managers. The times they are a changin'.
